Kaiyuan comes from Shanghai (China). He obtained his Bachelor degree from Miami University (USA) in 2020, where he worked under the supervision of Prof. Benjamin W. Gung investigating amide coupling reactions of bromoarenes. In the same year, he joined the group of Prof. Qiang Huang at Fudan University (China), as a laboratory assistant. During this time, Kaiyuan’s efforts focused on protein purification and the study of COVID-19 spike protein antibody and nanobody tandem. In 2023, he joined the Crisenza group at the University of Manchester to undertake his Master's project: this targets the design of chiral organic catalysts for the light-driven synthesis of non-natural amino acids.

In his spare time, Kaiyuan enjoys playing basketball, e-sports, and learning history and culture of foreign countries.
